Still trudging along…

March 24, 2006

The Friends of Jules Hunyadi United Devices Team is still active and running strong. With the dedication of Stevie, Manz, and Spencer, the team has made some real progress. I’ve added every computer in the house back to the folding, since the computers are now all checked out, cooling effectively, and most importantly, don’t generate the heat that some of the old systems did when folding. What is this all about? It’s about helping the medical and scientific community find a cure for cancer. It’s a distributed computing model similar to one that many people are familiar with: SETI online. While the SETI project was admirable, this one hits closer to home. Everyone I know has been effected by cancer, with either a close loved-one or friend having been afflicted or having died from it. I’d love to find aliens, but I’d rather find a cure for cancer first. If you want to help, click on the link above and get signed up. To be honest, I don’t care if you make your own team, join another team, or join ours. I would be happy to just have gotten some others to start running this app to help crunch some numbers towards finding a cure for cancer.

As the cliche goes, the life you save could be your own.

The Picard Song

March 24, 2006

There’s an old song from 2001 called “The Picard Song” that some of you may have heard. It was a song made by a person that calls himself/herself “DarkMateria” and is basically a decent dance song with the voice of Patrick Stewart reciting lines from Star Trek as well as a portion that sounds like it was taken from one of his Shakespeare performances. It’s really well done, and I forgot how much this song gets into your head when you listen to it. I’ve had to listen to it three times today already because it keeps drawing me in.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise.

…and on and on it goes in my head…

MAKE IT SO!

The future is now

March 22, 2006

Tonight begins the great migration. The first steps will be to set up active directory and get DNS set up appropriately in my home network. Then, I will have to get all the computers and devices in the house to connect through the new DNS server (internally), forward everything out correctly to the router, and then start migrating data from burner to scorcher. Once scorcher is tested appropriately, then I’ll swap the port forwards on the router, and scorcher will go live. If I do it right, the only thing visitors here should notice is perhaps a new look to a hosted site or two, and faster response from the server.

I don’t have a real ETA yet for when this will all be completed, but it all begins tonight. I hope to be done Monday, but that’s assuming all goes well.

Clean up, or else!

March 22, 2006

Wow… those Mexican soldiers are hard core!!!

[i>MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A Mexican soldier shot dead two subordinates for refusing an order to clean up their base on the country's Caribbean coast, a police spokesman said on Monday.

Alonso German was taken into military custody after shooting the two on Friday night at the army base near the resort of Cancun, said local police spokesman Angel Lopez.

He said he did not know what ranks the soldiers held. Officers at the base referred inquiries to Mexico’s Defense Ministry, where no one was immediately available for comment. [/i>

Brave New World

March 21, 2006

Burnerblog has always been on a Windows server. Ever since Burnerblog began (before it was even a blog, actually), it’s been on the very same install of Windows 2000 Advanced Server. From time to time, I’ve had to run updates, patches, service packs, etc, but as for installs, it’s been the same for the past five years (the server was installed and around before the blog).

Well, the hardware side of things, while still solid and running well, is now a bit long in the tooth, so we’re upgrading. I have a much faster server with more memory and oodles of more storage space already up and running. However, I’m going to do something radically different; it’s going to run IIS exclusively. No php or mysql on the new server. No siree; we’re going SQL Server and .Net 2.0 baby!

I have found a bevvy of .asp and .net scripts I’ll be implementing over the next few days while I do testing and configuration. Then, I’ll transfer all the data, blogs, galleries, etc. Then comes the big test: Exchange. I’ll install Exchange to run my email server (right now we use Argosoft), and once all is up and running, we’ll swap the routing on the internal network, and then Scorcher will go live.

Yes; the new server’s name will be Scorcher.

Will Burnerblog’s name change? Nah. Nothing will be different; Scorcher is just the internal network name of the new server that will supercede Burner.

What will happen to Burner once I retire it? It’ll go into the garage. I’m not sure yet whether I’ll part it out on eBay, or whether it’ll sit in the garage as a monument to it’s former glory.

Either way, the big news is that things will look a bit different but should run a lot faster very soon. It’s very exciting!

Cycle dude

March 7, 2006

This is a picture of a guy I took on our way from California to Texas.

I had to do a lot of Photoshopping to get it to look like it does (as you can see from the original below it), but I still have a lot of work to do on it before I feel good about it.

I thought it was a good picture, but it’s even better in B&W.

Stevie’s Retirement

March 2, 2006

This past week, Stevie retired from the Marines. Lawrence and I flew out to California for it, and I will be posting many pictures very soon!

Here’s one of my favorite pics of the retired Gunny.
