Sickness in the household

February 11, 2008

Well, I think I’m FINALLY starting to get over it, but Sherry is still suffering quite a bit. The flu has hit us hard this year. I can see this flu killing older people, ’cause it really took the wind out of our sails. Stevie had it earlier in the week as well, and he was off work for a few days because of it.

Brendon kicked it off, and I think Gelli is starting to come down with it, but at least Sherry and I don’t get sick at the same time. It’s nice, ’cause that way we can take care of each other when the other is sick.

So Tired

November 27, 2007

I am so tired. I’ve not been able to catch up on my sleep yet since getting home. Tonight we had band practice, and I just got home a while ago. It was fun and we did well, but here I am again, up late.

I really should go to sleep right now, and I think I’m going to. I have a lot of work to do in the morning, so I should probably get some rest.

Stepped On Broken Glass

November 16, 2007

Blood. Not a lot, but enough to catch my attention.

I dropped a glass plate onto the counter two days ago and cleaned it up, but I forgot to sweep. Well, today Bobby Bouchet reaped the rewards of his laziness; I stepped on a small piece of the broken glass. I pulled it out when it happened, but I didn’t realize it had went deep enough to draw blood. As I was sitting here writing the post about egg nog (yum!), I noticed a red blotch on the bottom of my right foot which is crossed under my left knee as I set at my desk. Rubbing the blotch revealed the pain caused by the piece of glass I removed earlier (not sharp pain, so I know the glass is out). Also, it’s no longer actively bleeding, but the blood that is on my foot was definitely from the glass shard wound.

I need to remember to either sweep up after accidents like that (I at least did pick up all the pieces I could see), or wear shoes (which would be silly since I often work in my undies or shorts).

Listening Habits

November 5, 2007

I burn through CD’s. No, I don’t burn them, I burn through them. As in listening. I get stuck on one and listen to it over and over and over again until I’ve been able to somehow understand it or “get it,” and then I move on to the next one. I think it’s a sign or symptom of my slight OCD characteristics.

I think I first discovered my OCD when I was around 10. I didn’t know what OCD was, but I knew that I put importance in items that people gave me, or that I somehow had attached to items. Like the pack of gum my grandfather gave me. I made sure to keep two pieces of Juicy Fruit still in that huge pack he bought me. I think it was the only pack of gum he ever bought me. I still have the last $20 bill my father gave me in my wallet. It goes with me everywhere I go. I wouldn’t buy the world with that bill if it were offered to me for $20. I have to fight my OCD whenever I clean my office. I keep some of the stupidest things for the stupidest reasons. I can, however, overrule my OCD quite easily, so I must have a very slight case of it. The last time I cleaned my office, I was able to get quite a bit of the junk in here thrown out. I’ve also made a mental list of the things I’m going to sell whenever I get the motivation to do so. I want to clear out some space for some of the new hotness I’ll be buying over the coming months/years.

So, back to listening habits. I’m still on the Giant Drag kick. I just wish there was more of it to listen to. I think I’ll burn out of this CD soon, and then I’ll be either back to a standard, or on to a new discovery. Only time will tell.

Why am I up so early?

September 17, 2007

I’ll give you a hint. It starts with “s” and ends with “ick.” Yeah, this weekend I caught whatever crud either my daughter or Stevie had, and now I’m suffering from it. And when I say suffering, I mean I really caught this bug in a bad way. My nose feels raw from the lava my nose is oozing at a steady rate, and I recently started a cough that produces nothing but makes my chest hurt something fierce. Let’s not forget the sinus headache, and the general crappiness of an aching body and you get the picture.

On the bright side, I’m listening to Fiona Apple’s version of “Across the Universe.” It’s probably one of my favorite covers of the song. Fiona also sings an amazing version of Elvis Costello’s “I Want You,” and a great rendition of “Use Me” by Bill Withers. I will probably make myself a cup of hot tea before trying to lay down again. My last attempt was met with failure as I coughed, weezed, hacked, and otherwise was too uncomfortable to even think about sleeping. I could have taken some Nyquil or something, but I already took another cold medicine, and the last thing I want to do is overdose myself on bad stuff.

So… here we are again. Another “I’m sick” post by Edge. Sheesh. You’d think I was a garbage collector or a lab tech or something.

On the bright side, Brendon plays his first Jr. High football game later this afternoon; I can’t wait! I’m going to take the camera and try to get as many photos as possible!

Not so sick.

August 5, 2007

It’s funny: while working on getting my archives here onto SP, Sherry said she noticed a large number of posts dedicated to my being sick. I told her that I posted about it because it is something that typically stresses me out a bit, and writing about the fact that I’m ill somehow helps the healing process.

Well, for those 2 people that read Burnerblog and have been following my health, you will be happy to know that the cold I had is now in it’s final stages. The nose isn’t running quite so much now, and the headache is pretty much more or less gone. I think what really helped was the fact that I was able to sleep so much last night. Sherry didn’t wake me up this morning,  so I was able to sleep in quite a bit (way too long in my opinion, but I think it was for the best).

I normally sleep with a CPAP (for those with sleep apnia, this machine is a God-send!), but whenever my nose is clogged, I not only cannot use the CPAP, but then have to deal with getting poor-quality sleep. It’s like a double-whammy. Somehow, I was able to get good rest last night, and I felt energized all day. Hopefully tonight the nose will be clear enough to allow the use of the CPAP. I have much to do tomorrow.

Sick continued.

August 3, 2007

Last night was my first night with this cold. The first night is usually the hardest. I did have the weird dreams that usually accompany an illness (I was in HS and my best friend was Scarlett Johansson and we were talking about her love life because I was her “nice” guy friend yet I had a crush on her and had to be in a school play where I was to act in a scene with George Bush (sr) that was a little lewd and the wife of the current president sent me a note telling me her husband was a jackass…) and I woke up with the dry and sore throat and stuffy nose and headache to end all headaches. I also had to eat a little crow for the minor error I made in my work project yesterday. That part was worse than the cold I have.

Oh well… I just have to remember to scrutinize more heavily next time any edits I’m given. The sad part is that I really could have sworn (and I did, actually) that I made EVERY change I was asked to do. Somehow, one slipped past me. Bah! It’s Friday, it’s over and done with, and it’s taken care of, so I really should just get over it and move forward. Learning experiences: this wasn’t the first, and won’t be the last.

Now I just need to figure out what kind of medicine to take. My nose was running last night, so I took some pseudephrine, and right now it’s stuffed only because I was sleeping. It’s not like my sinuses are full of junk… they’re draining nicely (and I’m sure they’ll continue to do so once I “clear the way”). I’ll at least take something for the headache… that part I really don’t want to have to deal with all day.

Sick.

August 2, 2007

As I remember it, I’ve made a few posts in the past with the title “sick.” It seems that, from time to time, I find myself under the weather. Most of those times, it’s just a flu or a cold, and it typically gets better within a day or so. I’m hoping that this current cold I have runs the same course. My son brought home a runny nose and a headache a few days ago, so I knew it was just a matter of time before I caught it from him. Sure enough, here I am with a running nose and a headache from hell.

As an adult, it typically takes me an additional day or two to get over it beyond what it takes one of my kids to get over their illness. It took my son two days to get over his, so I expect around three to four days for me to get over it. I really hope it’s no more than four this time.

You see, I’ve somehow gotten a part in a local theater company’s production of South Pacific after the person assigned to the role I’m taking dropped out of the production for personal reasons. I play Captain Brackett, and I have lots of lines and quite a few scenes. I’m not one of the lead characters, but more of a plot device. My wife says that I’m a plot tool, but I remind her that I’m not merely a tool; I’m complex, with lots of buttons, and a program. That makes me a device. Anyway, we’re on a hiatus  for rehearsals until Monday, so I have until Monday to memorize all my lines and to get better. The show is in two weeks, and I don’t want to mess it up for everyone else who has worked so hard.
